What is Reiki?

Reiki is a practice based on the idea that all living beings have universal life force energy flowing through and around them. This is a conscious, compassionate energy and as long as it circulates in the system, the being is alive. When the life energy no longer flows through the being, it dies. A low level or restricted flow of life energy increases vulnerability to illness. High levels and unrestricted flow encourage health. Reiki practitioners access this energy, allowing it to flow to the body, clear obstructions, and restore higher levels of life energy.

The world as vibrational energy
We tend to think of the world in terms of solid objects and the space around them. In the vibrational model, the entire Universe - physical objects, light, sound and all living things are composed of tiny particles vibrating at different frequencies. (See, A Practical Guide to Vibrational Medicine, Richard Gerber, M.D.) Reiki life-force energy is a particular vibration which is called ki.

Understanding Energetic Anatomy
Each person’s energy field is like a cloud which fills the physical body and extends past the physical body – the part which extends past the physical body is often referred to as the aura. Ancient energy healing traditions explain that similar to the way blood circulates through the circulatory system, life force energy circulates throughout the entire human energy field through 72,000 tiny energy pathways. These pathways flow through several energy centers called chakras where energy is stored and distributed. The chakras are like transformer stations. Blockages, depletion or injury within this energy system interrupt the healthy flow of life force energy which can lead to illness and disease. Reiki’s basic hand-treatment positions correspond to seven major chakras.
